The Status of Black Women in American Politics

Did you know that Black women represent a significant economic and voting base within the American populace? Yet, they continue to suffer disproportionately from a variety of social ills and are seriously underrepresented in American politics and even in the pipeline towards elected office. The late Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm once said, “At present, our country needs women’s idealism and determination, perhaps more in politics than anywhere else.” This statement rings true today and Black women have a pivotal role to play in reshaping the direction of our country.
